Sunrise Farms is an egg production company that operates at least 9 egg factory farms in California, the largest of which confines 550,000 hens. The company's eggs are “Certified Humane.” Sunrise Farms supplies eggs to other brands including Clover Sonoma, Walmart Great Value, and Eggland's Best.
Several Sunrise Farms factory farms in Sonoma County have been investigated by Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) between 2016 and 2023. In 2016-2018, investigators found tens of thousands of birds confined in towering 15-foot-tall rows of tightly packed cages, despite Proposition 2 banning intensive confinement of egg-laying hens in battery cages more than a year earlier. Sunrise Farms co-owner Arnie Riebli was a vocal opponent of Proposition 2.
DxE investigators also documented violations of California's animal cruelty statute, Penal Code 597, including

Once the hens' egg production drops (usually at 1.5–2 years old, though they can live over a decade), entire flocks of egg-laying hens are killed in a process called “depopulation.” Sunrise Farms co-owner Mike Weber testified under oath that his facilities never use cervical dislocation (breaking necks by hand), but undercover footage from 2021 showed Sunrise employees doing exactly that.
In 2023, in response to an avian flu outbreak, Sunrise Farms killed 115,000 hens via “ventilation shutdown plus heat,” a prolonged mass kill method that involves sealing the barns and pumping in hot air and steam. Ventilation shutdown is widely condemned by veterinarians as one of the most inhumane ways to kill animals. Weber told the press the process “was “99% effective within two hours,” meaning some birds had not died after two hours of extreme overheating.
