Petaluma Egg Farm is an egg production company that operates 5 egg factory farms in California, contrary to the claim on their website that “Every egg we produce comes from our North Bay farm.” Petaluma Egg Farm sells under the consumer brand names Judy's Family Farm, Rock Island, Uncle Eddie's, and Daily Egg.
The company sells eggs that are “Certified Humane” through their Judy's Family Farm brand. On its website, Petaluma Egg Farm claims that their “free range eggs are laid by hens that can spend their days outdoors roaming the pasture as they please” except when prevented by risks “such as weather or disease.” They then admit that due to avian influenza, all their birds are being confined indoors.
This misleading marketing is not new, however. Back in 2014, Petaluma Egg Farm was forced to modify the imagery used on their “Judy's Family Farm” packaging as part of a settlement from a false-advertising lawsuit brought against them by the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF). ALDF brought the lawsuit because the imagery used on the packaging led consumers to mistakenly believe the hens were “free range” and had significant outdoor access, when in reality they did not.
In January 2015, Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) released an undercover investigation into Petaluma Egg Farm's main location in Petaluma, CA, which was covered by the New York Times. At this large, “cage-free” egg facility, DxE found thousands of hens living crowded together inside filthy sheds and sick hens covered in caked-on feces and missing feathers.
